Bang for buck - Action Cam

One of the best action cams. The Virb Elite looks like a cross between a flashlight and a wine stopper. I have been using GARMIN VIRB ELITE for 3 weeks now, the video quality and the battery back up is amazing. The LCD plays a major role. I thought the LCD might drain the battery but garmin has chosen a novel way round this problem. The screen is not backlit, so it consumes far less power than a regular LCD. The main downside is that it is impossible to see in the dark, and not exactly rich in colour. But bright sunlight is actually beneficial, although viewing angles are still relatively poor. The resolution is also just 205 x 148, which is really only enough to ensure your framing is approximately correct and the camera is pointing in the right direction. But it's better to have than not, as it also lets you configure menu settings. The mounts are the best.. as it can be twisted 360 degrees unlike gopro. if u need to change angel u need another mount piece in gropro. There's a Garmin-to-GoPro adapter that allows you to use your existing mounts, if you have some already The VIRB isn't packed with manual settings. Just a few options are available, for example to change the lens correction and toggle digital stabilisation. You can also turn off the internal mono microphone, which is fairly meagre in ability, although there is also an optional USB to 3.5-inch jack converter which will be useful for professional users. Garmin alleges the VIRB can manage close to three hours of shooting on a single 2000mAh battery, although we managed closer to two and a half hours. Since the pack is removable, you could bring more than one if you need to shoot for longer. In good lighting, the picture has plenty of detail and accurate colour, although as almost everything is in focus nothing is as sharp as a camcorder using a lens with a narrower depth of field a common issue with fixed-focus lenses. The image stabilisation is reasonably effective, too, although not up with optical systems. Performance in low light lacks some of the clarity of the image in bright conditions, but accurate colours are maintained, and there isn't any unsightly grain. Overall, the decently sized CMOS provides commendable image quality, The main USP of the Virb Elite is that the camera contains a GPS chip and is ANT+ enabled. That means you can link it up to your HRM, power meter and speed-cadence sensor and record that information, along with your route, in a GPX file. The camera records the GPS location whenever you're filming, too. The upshot of all this is that you can import all your data into the Garmin Virb Edit software and make a cut of your ride that includes the GPX information overlaid on top. So, you get a wiggly line showing your route and the choice of a number of different data displays from simple number stats to tachograph-style needles and the like. As well as the ANT+ data the Virb Elite has an in-built barometric altimeter which is a definite plus for ride data recording. VIRB Edit software, which you can download and install from Garmin's website. You probably won't want to use this as your primary editing app, but it's the only software that can import the GPS and sensor data along with the video, so it can be used to combine this with the footage. A series of templates are provided so the information can be attractively positioned on-screen for output. If you want an action camera that can provide a more analytical view of your sports activities alongside the video, the Garmin VIRB Elite is without peer. Garmin has integrated the VIRB with its other product lines well. It's also capable of commendable video performance. The GoPro may still hold the crown for professional users, but Garmin's VIRB has plenty to offer the sports enthusiasts. Over all its the BEST bang for buck ACTION CAM .

    Overall Average performance

Bought this cam just 5 days back. Device got delivered in 2 days. Tested Video quality & other features and it is good for its price. But Charging the device is most irritating job. Pros - Value for Money, Video Quality, Provision to use other action cam (GOPRO) Mounts, Display Screen. Cons - Charging takes too much time and need 6-7 hours for full charge - Most disappointing, Display screen is not clear and it is not functional in dark

Really good beginner to intermediate action cam

Pros: 1) Great video quality, even in low light 2) Easy to use interface with many functions 3) Captures a lot of information such as speed, elevation etc 4) Great battery life. Cons: 1) Video gets a little less sharp sometimes. It doesn't happen much though. 2) Looooong charging time. 3) Photo capture is not that great. 4) I faced a few random restarts while charging. But it's been only two days and I just received a firmware update. Let's see how it performs..
